So it is election week for the DSU. A chance for the candidates to talk to students they might not get the chance to meet with in the regular university lives. I love this time of year, candidate or not, I love being involved in shaping ideas on how to improve the lives of people.
For my position of VP AE I have a few points that I plan on addressing if I am successful in getting elected.
- (Second) Recover the 4% funding cuts from this year by working with the government to grow the provincial economy.
- Get Dalhousie one of the two student seats at the MOU negotiating table
- Push the MOU talks up from December to September so we can make the spring ’12 budget
- (Third) Establish a collaborative business incubator on campus to open in the fall semester
- (First) Push for establishing grant money for grad students, provincially
- Continue front end tuition credit support for NS universities
- Push for provincial back end tax free salary portion in first 3 years of post grad work in professional degrees, ie: Law, Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing, etc.
- Protect the vital programs at Dal from being eliminated due to the provincial funding cuts.
Continued work:
- Follow up on Rob’s work getting the senate to approve publishing teacher reviews
- Examine the academic review process in all faculties to potentially harmonize them
- Work with other Exec’s to develop a food strategy on campus that includes options for local products
